Shaun Ryder, the Manchester music icon, has spoken out about missing the funeral of his friend and former Happy Mondays bandmate, Mani. Ryder revealed that he was unable to attend the funeral due to catching pneumonia and collapsing.

Ryder, 62, spoke to NME about the incident, saying: "I couldn't get out of bed. I was in a really bad way." [1]

Mani, whose real name was Paul Banky, passed away in November 2025 at the age of 63. Ryder and Mani had been friends for many years and had worked together on various musical projects.

The funeral was held in Manchester, and Ryder expressed his regret at not being able to attend. "I'm really sorry I missed it," he said. "I was in a really bad way, and I couldn't get out of bed." [1]

Ryder's comments come as a tribute to Mani, who was a highly respected musician and a key figure in the Manchester music scene. Ryder and Mani had a close friendship and had collaborated on several projects over the years.
