In a move to address growing concerns about the environmental impact of data centers, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Josh Hawley have sent a letter to the Energy Information Agency (EIA) demanding that they mandate annual electricity disclosure for data centers.
The letter, which was sent on Thursday morning, highlights the significant energy consumption of data centers and the need for greater transparency in their operations. Data centers are estimated to consume around 1% of the world's electricity, and their energy usage is expected to continue growing as more companies move their operations online.
The senators' demand for transparency comes as concerns about the environmental impact of data centers continue to grow. In recent years, there have been several high-profile data center failures, including a massive outage at a data center in Virginia that affected millions of users.
The EIA has not yet responded to the senators' letter, but the move is seen as a significant step towards greater transparency in the data center industry.
